Calcium and vascular smooth muscle contraction.
Radioactive calcium flux in rabbit aorta was studied to evaluate factors regulating the movement of calcium into and out of the cell. Calcium content was estimated both from (1) the amount of Ca present in the tissue and the specific activity of Ca in the bathing medium, and (2) determination of chemical calcium by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Calcium efflux was followed by washing aort...
متن کاملRelation of muscle cell contraction and calcium distribution in sarcomere.
A model of activation of muscle contraction has been proposed. It is based on calcium diffusion and binding to specific regulatory sites in a sarcomere. Calcium ions activate interactions of contractile proteins and thus the generation of force. The model quantifies the relation between calcium released from intracellular stores and the elicited force.

1. Conventional **Ca efflux studies of Buccinum and Neptunia pharangeal retractor and columella muscles revealed the presence of a fast and a slow calcium compartment. KCl-induced depolarization caused a stimulation of the *Ca efflux from the slow compartment, suggesting that this compartment may be related to calcium diffusion from intracellular sources. 2. Fine structural studies showed a lac...
متن کاملCalcium-dependent and calcium-independent inhibition of contraction by cGMP/cGKI in intestinal smooth muscle.
cGMP-dependent protein kinase I (cGKI) induces relaxation of smooth muscle via several pathways that include inhibition of intracellular Ca(2+) signaling and/or involve activation of myosin phosphatase. In the present study, we investigated these mechanisms comparatively in colon and jejunum longitudinal smooth muscle from mice. In simultaneous recordings from colon muscle, 8-bromo-cGMP (8-Br-c...
متن کاملWater and Muscle Contraction
The interaction between water and the protein of the contractile machinery as well as the tendency of these proteins to form geometrically ordered structures provide a link between water and muscle contraction. Protein osmotic pressure is strictly related to the chemical potential of the contractile proteins, to the stiffness of muscle structures and to the viscosity of the sliding of the thin ...
